Dear Aspiring Compleat Pianist,

Welcome to *The Compleat Pianist,* your Internet source for "Developing Compleat Musicianship at the Piano." If you are aspiring to become a "compleat pianist," signified by…

  • Total Versatility at the keyboard (Rehearsed & Improvised Solos, Accompaniment),
  • Mastery over Every aspect of Practice and Performance (Sight, Memorization, & Ear), and
  • An Uncommon, even Uncanny Ability to Unleash True Inspiration at the Piano,
…you have found the ideal source!

The Problem

Why is it that many acclaimed concert pianists cannot confidently improvise a concert-level impromptu - based on immediately-new material, totally unrehearsed - creating a piece so lovely, so powerful, so breathtaking that not only the audience but they themselves are exhilarated?!

The 20th century has produced many worthy performers and teachers of the piano. But thousands upon thousands have lost more through misguided, competitive specialization than they have gained by it.

Everything to Gain and Nothing to Lose

We believe this is unnecessary. We believe that a complete mastery of music and musicianship - including all aspects of artistic interpretation & originality - is attainable by more of today's rising artists as well as to many amateur students of the piano. We believe that those who hear the call for depth and breadth will fare better in the real world of performing and concertizing. We believe that they can compete in the world of "high accuracy" (technical prowess) - and turn out superior, more authentic/artistic performances. ...and - as an added bonus - they will thus further enjoy their music-making!

The Root (of Compleat Musicianship at the Piano) Is Being Transplanted

These are exciting times. Musicians are beginning to return to full-orbed musicianship at the piano. They have grown weary of endless technical perfectionism when it comes at the expense of full-orbed artistry. Select artists are finding their pianistic originality attracting larger audiences. (We will feature some of these in upcoming issues!) More importantly, a growing group is discovering what they had missed in their "traditional, competitive, classical training" (which is actually modern, not truly traditional!).

It is the purpose of *The Compleat Pianist* (web site & newsletter) to engage you in the search, to introduce you to preliminary answers, and to point you to sources that can help you to answer questions for yourself. Yes, we will build on the work of other pioneers, so…you can expect to see references to (and careful citations from) other good source material. Find it. Procure it. Read it. Absorb and Apply it. It can revolutionize your "musicianship at the piano." But we can hardly wait to give you the original framing of principles you will not find in any other book or source - developed by internationally award-winning pianist-composer Barry Sindlinger! Coming soon…

Sample Content

Expect to find - in our occasional newsletter and developing web site - comprehensive, proven approaches to keyboard mastery, award-winning instruction (via notation, audio, and, eventually, video), valuable resources highlighted & reviewed, and critiques of modern and historical failures in piano education.

Topics we will address (and flesh out) include…

  • Multiplying Your Practice Results through the World's Most Efficient Practice Methods (this from one skeptical of "methods"!)
  • How to Turn Potentially-Crippling Performance "Mistakes" to Your (& the Music's) Advantage
  • Making a Habit of Turning in Brilliant Performances
  • Finding "Something New to Say" in Every Performance
  • 1st Principles of Successful Pianism…and Their Application
  • The Only Good Theory Is a "Useful" Theory
  • Everyone Composes: How to Find Your *Muse*
  • 3 Reasons You Must Master Dissonance in Improvisation

Conclusion

The internet allows nearly instantaneous access to world-class material. We plan to make available to you such material as soon as we can publish it. Always, content is key, so if stellar content justifies a performance/teaching environment with "noise," we will likely publish. Truly inspired recitals and workshops are rare enough - we shouldn't exclude them just because they didn't enjoy a gargantuan recording budget!

So, thank you for joining us. We intend to help to close a current gap in the vast world of piano education: We want to serve you as you seek to become a "compleat pianist."

Best Wishes in Your Pursuit of "Compleat Musicianship at the Piano,"
